Canonical Tag Guide
Our colleague over in Strategic Communications, Tristan Peery, has shared an informative guide for understanding the importance of reviewing your pages' canonical tags. If you're unfamiliar, the canonical tag is a tool that informs search engines of:
- a preferred URL in case there are multiple URL path references in your site leading to the same content, and/or;
- which site is the original publisher of a page in the case where content is duplicated or very similar from across multiple sites on the web.
In both cases, knowing when and how to set a canonical tag means better search results and avoids SEO penalties that may wind up hiding your content in search indices.
